Design a ramp challenge

Adjust a ramp's height or angle across several attempts to make a ball land inside a target.

Engineers use pushes and pulls on purpose to solve real problems. Today your problem is this: make a ball roll down a ramp and land inside a target, like a bowl or a box.

You probably will not get it perfect on the first try, and that is expected. Change one thing, like the ramp's height, and try again.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set a real target, like a bowl or box, a short distance from the ramp.
  • Let your child adjust the ramp height or angle themselves between attempts.
  • Celebrate each attempt, including the misses, as useful information.
  • Encourage changing only one thing at a time so the cause of any improvement is clear.
Talk about it:
  • What did you change to make the ball land in the target?
  • Did it work on the first try?
  • What does it feel like to try again after it does not work?

Mastery looks like: They adjust the ramp across multiple attempts to land a ball in a target and can describe at least one real change made.

Common stumbles: Giving up after one failed attempt instead of adjusting and trying again; changing too many things at once to know what actually helped.
