Build a marble run

Design and build a simple marble run with at least two connected sections that successfully moves a marble from start to finish.

This week is an engineering challenge. You will combine everything you know, ramps, pushes, and bumps, to build a path for a marble to travel from a starting point to an ending point.

Real engineers rarely get it perfect on the first try. If the marble stops, flies off, or gets stuck, that is useful information, not a failure, and you get to fix it and try again.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather cardboard tubes, boxes, and tape, and help hold pieces steady while your child builds.
  • Let your child test and fail safely; treat a stuck marble as a clue, not a problem.
  • Ask your child to explain their plan out loud before and after each attempt.
  • Take a photo of the finished run to celebrate the completed engineering project.
Talk about it:
  • What part of your run worked well?
  • What part needs fixing?
  • How did you use a ramp or a bump in your design?

Mastery looks like: They build a marble run with at least two connected sections that successfully moves a marble from start to end.

Common stumbles: Leaving gaps between sections that stop the marble; making a ramp so steep the marble flies off the track entirely.
