Roll different balls -- compare

Run a fair test comparing how different balls move down the same ramp, and describe the real differences observed.

Scientists compare things by keeping the test fair: same ramp, same starting push, and only the ball changes. Today you will roll a few different balls and describe how each one really moves.

Not every ball behaves the same way. Some roll straight, some wobble, some bounce at the bottom. There is no single right answer here, only honest observation.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather a few different balls from around the house: a bouncy ball, a heavier ball, maybe a lopsided one.
  • Keep the ramp and the starting push as identical as you can between tests.
  • Encourage close, honest description over a "right" answer, since balls behave in real, sometimes surprising ways.
  • Let your child choose the order and run the whole test themselves with your support.
Talk about it:
  • Which ball went farthest?
  • What did you keep the same so it was a fair test?
  • Did anything surprise you about how a ball moved?

Mastery looks like: They run a fair comparison test, keeping the ramp and push the same, and honestly report real differences between balls.

Common stumbles: Changing the push strength between balls, which makes the test unfair; not paying attention to keep the ramp itself the same.
