Push or pull? Sort your toys

Identify whether an action is a push or a pull, and sort real actions into the correct group.

A push moves something away from you. A pull moves something toward you. Every time something starts moving, a push or a pull got it going.

You push and pull things all day without noticing. Opening a drawer is a pull. Closing it is usually a push. Today you will notice on purpose.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Physically push and pull real toys and doors together, naming the force each time.
  • Play a quick game: call out an action, and have your child act out push or pull.
  • Point out that some actions, like swinging, use both a push and a pull.
  • Use the words push and pull naturally during play all week, not just during lesson time.
Talk about it:
  • Is riding a swing a push or a pull to get it started?
  • Name something you pushed today.
  • Name something you pulled today.

Mastery looks like: They correctly label at least five real actions as a push or a pull.

Common stumbles: Assuming every force is a push; struggling with actions that use both a push and a pull, which is a fair thing to find tricky.
