People are living things too!

Recognize that people are living things with needs like other animals, plus the ability to grow and change over time.

People are living things too. Just like animals, we need food, water, air, and shelter to survive. We also grow and change a lot over time, from a tiny baby into the person you are today, and beyond.

A baby cannot get its own food or build its own shelter, so grown-ups help meet those needs. As you grow older, you can do more and more to help meet your own needs.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look at baby photos together if you have them, and talk about how needs were met back then.
  • Point out moments today when your child is meeting more of their own needs than they used to.
  • Compare a family pet's needs to your own needs, out loud, item by item.
  • Celebrate growth specifically: "You could not do that a year ago, and now you can."
Talk about it:
  • What is one need you share with your pet or a bird?
  • How have you grown or changed since you were a baby?
  • Who helps meet your needs?

Mastery looks like: They name at least three needs shared between humans and animals and describe one real way they have grown.

Common stumbles: Assuming humans are completely different from animals in their basic needs; confusing wants, like toys, with true needs.
