Grow a windowsill sprout

Plant a seed correctly and predict what it needs to sprout and grow over the coming weeks.

Today you start a real, weeks-long experiment: planting a seed and watching what happens over time. A seed needs three things to sprout: water, a sunny spot, and time. It will not happen all at once.

You will check on your seed regularly for the rest of this unit, so choose a spot you will remember to visit every day.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Actually plant a real bean or fast seed together in a small cup or pot.
  • Choose a sunny windowsill you both walk past every day, so checking becomes a habit.
  • Start a simple growth log: a mark or drawing every few days showing any change.
  • Warn that nothing may show for several days at first. That is normal, not a failure.
Talk about it:
  • What do you think will happen first, a stem or the whole plant?
  • How often should we check on our seed?
  • What could go wrong for our plant?

Mastery looks like: They plant a seed correctly with soil, water, and sunlight, and can state what it needs to sprout and grow.

Common stumbles: Overwatering the seed every time they check on it; placing the cup somewhere without enough light; expecting instant growth.
