What plants need: light and water

Identify that plants need light and water to grow, and predict what happens when a need is missing.

Plants are living things too, and they need light and water to grow, just like animals need food and water. Sunlight gives a plant energy, almost like food. Water travels up from the roots to keep the whole plant healthy.

Unlike animals, plants do not eat food from a bowl. They make their own food using light, water, and air. If a plant does not get enough light or water, it wilts, turns brown, or stops growing.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Examine a real houseplant together: check the soil, the light, and the leaves.
  • Water it together if it needs water, and talk out loud about why.
  • Find the sunniest spot in your home and talk about why a plant would like it there.
  • If a plant looks droopy or brown, use it as a real example of an unmet need.
Talk about it:
  • What happens to a plant if it does not get water?
  • Does a plant need food like we do, or does it make its own?
  • Where is a sunny spot in our home?

Mastery looks like: They name light and water as plant needs and correctly predict what happens when one is missing.

Common stumbles: Thinking plants need the same kind of food people eat; forgetting that plants need light, not just water, to grow.
