First Sound, Last Sound

Isolate and say the first sound and the last sound in a spoken word.

Every word has a sound at the very front and a sound at the very end. This week you find both, just by listening.

Say the word sun slowly: sss-uh-n. The first sound is s. The last sound is n. You do not need to see the word at all, only hear it.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Stretch the word out like a rubber band when you say it, so each sound is easier to hear on its own.
  • Ask for the first sound and the last sound as two separate questions, not both at once, so it is not confusing.
  • Use everyday words around you, a cup, a shoe, a spoon, instead of only workbook words.
  • If your child answers with a letter name instead of a sound, gently say the sound back to them.
Talk about it:
  • What is the first sound in your own name?
  • What is the last sound in your own name?
  • Which is easier to hear, the first sound or the last sound?

Mastery looks like: They correctly name the first sound and the last sound in a spoken word without seeing it written.

Common stumbles: Naming the letter instead of the sound; mixing up the first and last sound when asked quickly.
