Reread Favorites for Smoothness

Reread a familiar short passage several times, showing improved speed and smoothness with each read.

Reading a page again is not boring, it is training. Each time you read the same page, it gets a little faster and a little smoother.

Smooth reading sounds like talking. Choppy reading sounds like a list of separate words. Rereading turns choppy into smooth.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Choose a short passage, half a page or so, that is familiar but not fully memorized.
  • Read one smooth model yourself first so your child has a clear target to aim for.
  • Notice small gains quietly, just for encouragement, with no timer or pressure.
  • Praise smooth, expressive reading over pure speed. Fast and choppy is not the real goal.
Talk about it:
  • How did the third read feel different from the first?
  • What does smooth reading sound like, in your own words?
  • Which page would you like to reread again tomorrow?

Mastery looks like: They reread a short passage and show clear improvement in speed and smoothness across a few reads.

Common stumbles: Rushing carelessly through the first read instead of reading it accurately before speeding up; reading fast but skipping or guessing at words.
