Six More Sounds: I N E F L W

Say the sound for the letters i, n, e, f, l, and w, and blend spoken sounds using any letters learned so far.

Six new letters again: i, n, e, f, l, and w. Two of them, i and e, are vowels, just like a and o.

I says "ih," like in itch. E says "eh," like in egg. Every single word needs a vowel sound like these hiding inside it somewhere.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Review all twelve sounds from the first two weeks before adding these six, so nothing gets forgotten.
  • Say i and e side by side, slowly. They can sound alike at first, so give your child time to feel the small difference.
  • Point out that i and e are vowels, just like a and o, and that every single word needs one somewhere inside it.
  • Keep every blend spoken out loud. Print still waits a few more weeks.
Talk about it:
  • Which is easier for you to hear, i or e?
  • What word did we blend from h, e, and n?
  • Can you think of a word that starts with the l sound?

Mastery looks like: They say all six new sounds (i, n, e, f, l, w) instantly and blend three spoken sounds, using any letters learned so far, into a word.

Common stumbles: Mixing up the short i and short e sounds since they sound close together; forgetting w is its own letter sound.
