Six More Sounds: P B R D G O

Say the sound for the letters p, b, r, d, g, and o, and blend spoken sounds using any letters learned so far.

Six more letters this week: p, b, r, d, g, and o. That is twelve sounds in your head now, just from two weeks of school.

O is your first new vowel sound this year. It says "ah," like in the word octopus. Keep blending too -- more sounds means more words you can build with your ears.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Warm up with the six sounds from last week before adding these six, so the old sounds stay fresh.
  • Say b and p side by side and let your child feel the difference on their lips, since the two can look and sound alike.
  • Celebrate o as the first vowel of the year. Point out that vowels are the sound every word needs at least one of.
  • Keep blending words out loud with no print in sight. Ears first, eyes later.
Talk about it:
  • Which two sounds felt most alike today, p or b?
  • What word did we blend from d, o, and g?
  • Can you think of a word that starts with the g sound?

Mastery looks like: They say all six new sounds (p, b, r, d, g, o) instantly and blend three spoken sounds, using any letters learned so far, into a word.

Common stumbles: Mixing up the p and b sounds since they look and feel similar in the mouth; forgetting o is a vowel and rushing past it.
