Short O: Hot, Top, Dog

Blend three-sound words using the short o sound, reading hot, top, and dog.

A new vowel sound this week: short o, the "ah" sound you already know from the letter o. Blend it into real words: hot, top, and dog.

Remember blending dog with just your ears, back in week two? Now you read that very same word with your eyes.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Say the short o sound alone first, "ah," before blending it into a full word.
  • Point out that dog is the very same word blended by ear back near the start of the year, now read with the eyes.
  • Watch for short o being read as short u by mistake, since the two can sound close together.
  • Mix in a few short a and short i words too, so all three vowels stay fresh together.
Talk about it:
  • What sound does the letter o make in hot?
  • Do you remember blending dog with just your ears a while back?
  • Which is easier to read for you, hot or dog?

Mastery looks like: They blend and read short o words like hot, top, and dog accurately, without confusing the sound with short u.

Common stumbles: Confusing the short o sound with the short u sound; slipping back into an old vowel sound out of habit.
