The Big Pig: Your Second Story

Read a short decodable story mixing known short-a and short-i words, and answer a question about what the character does.

Another story, this time with a pig. You already know every word you need: a, big, pig, sat, mat, the, on, and one new word, can.

Can is easy to blend: c-a-n. You already know all three sounds. Read the whole story slowly first, then read it again faster.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Point out that nearly every word in this story has already been read in an earlier week, so this should feel easier than the first story.
  • Introduce can by blending it fresh, the same way as any other three-sound word.
  • Read the story once for accuracy, sounding out anything slow, then again for smoothness.
  • Ask what the pig does at the end so meaning stays connected to the words on the page.
Talk about it:
  • What did the big pig do in this story?
  • Was this story easier or harder than the first one about the cat?
  • How did blending can feel, since it was a brand new word?

Mastery looks like: They read the whole short story with good accuracy and can say what the pig does by the end.

Common stumbles: Slowing all the way back down on words that should already be automatic, like big or sat; losing track of the story meaning while decoding can.
