Read Big, Pig, Dig

Add a beginning consonant sound to the ending ig to read the three-sound words big, pig, and dig.

New ending this week: ig. Add b to the front: big. Add p to the front: pig. Add d to the front: dig. Same trick as cat, sat, and mat, brand new ending.

Once you know one ending like ig, you can build many words from it just by swapping the very first sound.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Cover the ig part with a finger so your child sounds out only the beginning first, then reveal the rest.
  • Ask your child to notice out loud that this is the exact same trick used for cat, sat, and mat with a new ending.
  • Mix the three words into random order to check real reading, not memory of a list.
  • If big, pig, and dig come easily, try wig too as a bonus fourth word with the same ending.
Talk about it:
  • What sound did we add to ig to make pig?
  • How is this week like the week we read cat, sat, and mat?
  • Can you think of another word that might end in ig?

Mastery looks like: They read big, pig, and dig by blending a beginning sound onto the known ending ig, in any order, without hints.

Common stumbles: Reading the ending correctly but guessing at the beginning sound instead of blending it; mixing up the ig ending with the earlier at ending.
