Flat shapes all around us

Identify and name basic flat shapes, circle, square, triangle, and rectangle, no matter their size or orientation.

Shapes are everywhere. A circle is round, with no corners. A square has 4 equal sides and 4 corners. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners, but the sides are not all the same length.

A shape is still the same shape even if it is big, small, tilted, or a different color. A tiny red triangle and a huge blue triangle are both triangles.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Go on a shape hunt around your home or yard. Name every shape you see.
  • Turn a shape upside down or sideways and ask if it is still the same shape. It is.
  • Count sides and corners together out loud to tell shapes apart.
  • Do not worry about fancier shapes yet. Circle, square, triangle, and rectangle are the stars this week.
Talk about it:
  • What makes a triangle a triangle?
  • How is a square different from a rectangle?
  • What shapes did you find on our walk or around the house?

Mastery looks like: They name circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles correctly, even when the shape is turned, tiny, or huge.

Common stumbles: Thinking a tilted or small shape is a different shape; mixing up squares and rectangles.
