Solid shapes: cube, sphere, cone, cylinder

Identify and name basic solid shapes, cube, sphere, cone, and cylinder, in real objects.

Flat shapes are flat, but solid shapes take up real space. You can hold them. A cube looks like a box with 6 flat square sides, like a dice. A sphere is perfectly round all over, like a ball.

A cone has a round bottom and comes to a point, like an ice cream cone. A cylinder has two round ends and straight sides, like a can of soup.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Go on a solid-shape hunt around your kitchen and toy shelf.
  • Let your child hold and roll each shape. Spheres and cylinders roll, cubes do not.
  • Compare a flat circle (from week 6) to a solid sphere so they feel the difference: flat versus solid.
  • Use real names, cube, sphere, cone, cylinder, instead of just ball or box.
Talk about it:
  • Which solid shapes can roll? Which cannot?
  • What is the difference between a flat circle and a solid sphere?
  • What solid shapes did you find in the kitchen?

Mastery looks like: They correctly name real objects as cubes, spheres, cones, or cylinders.

Common stumbles: Confusing a flat circle with a sphere, or a flat square with a cube; mixing up cone and cylinder.
