Which holds more?

Compare the capacity of two containers by filling them and describing which holds more or less.

Capacity means how much a container can hold. To compare two containers fairly, fill one with water, rice, or sand, then pour it into the other.

If it overflows, the first container holds more. If there is empty room left, the first container holds less.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Do this near a sink or outside. Pouring play can get a little wet and messy.
  • Use rice, sand, or water and let your child do the actual pouring.
  • Ask them to predict which container holds more before testing, then check together.
  • Use the words holds more, holds less, and holds the same often.
Talk about it:
  • How do you test which container holds more?
  • Did any of your predictions surprise you?
  • Can you find two containers that hold about the same amount?

Mastery looks like: They fairly compare two containers by pouring and correctly say which holds more, less, or the same.

Common stumbles: Guessing capacity from the height of a container instead of testing by pouring; not noticing overflow or leftover room.
