One more, one less

Find one more and one less than a given number up to 10.

One more means the next number up. One more than 3 is 4. One less means the number right before. One less than 3 is 2.

Use your fingers to check. Hold up the number, then add one finger for one more, or put one finger down for one less.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use fingers or small toys. Show the number, then add or take away just one.
  • Say one more and one less often during the day, like with snacks or steps on the stairs.
  • Point to a number on a number line and ask what comes on each side of it.
  • Keep numbers small and go slowly. This idea takes real practice to feel automatic.
Talk about it:
  • How do you find one more than a number?
  • How do you find one less than a number?
  • What is one more than your age?

Mastery looks like: They quickly say one more and one less than any number up to 10, without recounting from 1.

Common stumbles: Recounting from 1 every time instead of stepping just one number up or down; mixing up more and less.
