Subtracting within 5, getting fast

Subtract within 5 with increasing fluency, connecting each fact back to objects when needed.

Just like addition, subtraction facts within 5 can become fast and easy with practice. 5 - 1 is almost the same story every time: one less than 5 is 4.

If you get stuck, go back to objects. Five is a great number to know by heart in both directions, adding and subtracting.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pair every subtraction fact with its matching addition fact, such as 5-2=3 with 3+2=5.
  • Use fingers as the fallback tool, not as the only method forever.
  • Practice in short, cheerful bursts rather than long drills.
  • Praise the strategy of checking with objects when unsure. That is smart math, not a failure.
Talk about it:
  • Which subtraction facts within 5 do you already know fast?
  • How does knowing 3 + 2 = 5 help you with 5 - 2?
  • What is your fastest subtraction fact?

Mastery looks like: They answer subtraction facts within 5 quickly and can connect them back to a matching addition fact.

Common stumbles: Forgetting which number to start from; recounting from scratch instead of connecting to a known addition fact.
