Fingers are math tools

Use fingers to represent a number in more than one way, such as 4 as 4 on one hand, or 2 and 2 on two hands.

Your fingers are math tools you always carry with you. You can show a number in more than one way. Four fingers could be 4 on one hand, or 2 fingers on each hand.

Showing a number two different ways is the very beginning of a big idea: numbers can be broken into smaller parts.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Play show me games: show me 4, now show me 4 a different way.
  • There is no single right way to show a number on fingers. Many combinations work.
  • This finger play quietly builds toward addition facts later, like 2 + 2 = 4.
  • Keep it playful and fast. This is a warm-up game, not a worksheet.
Talk about it:
  • What are two different ways to show the number 4 on your fingers?
  • Can you show 5 in three different ways?
  • Why is it useful to know more than one way to make a number?

Mastery looks like: They flexibly show a number on their fingers in at least two different combinations.

Common stumbles: Always defaulting to the same one-hand shape; not realizing a split, like 2 and 2, still equals the same total.
