Taking Turns and Sharing

Practice taking turns and sharing, and describe a friendly way to ask for a turn.

Taking turns and sharing let everyone get a chance to play or use something. It can feel hard to wait, but waiting your turn is fair to everyone.

You can practice taking turns just like you practice anything else. It gets easier with practice.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Play an actual turn-taking game with your child today, like a simple board game or rolling a ball back and forth.
  • Use a visible timer for tricky toy-sharing moments so "my turn" and "your turn" feel fair, not random.
  • Model asking for a turn out loud yourself: "Can I have a turn with the remote when you are done?"
  • Praise your child specifically when they wait or share without being reminded.
Talk about it:
  • How did it feel to wait for your turn?
  • What can you say when you want a turn?
  • What happens when everyone shares?

Mastery looks like: They can ask for a turn appropriately, or wait for one, at least some of the time without a reminder.

Common stumbles: Grabbing instead of asking, or getting upset while waiting, is completely normal and just needs continued practice.
