Rules Keep Us Safe and Fair

Explain that rules exist to keep people safe and treat people fairly, and give a real home rule as an example.

Rules are things we agree to do so everyone stays safe and things stay fair. Your home has rules. Your school has rules too.

Some rules keep you safe, like holding a grown-up's hand near cars. Some rules keep things fair, like waiting your turn.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • List your family's real rules together on paper, and talk through why each one exists.
  • Sort a few rules together into "keeps us safe" and "keeps things fair," noticing some do both.
  • Avoid framing rules as punishment; talk about what could go wrong without the rule instead.
  • Ask your child to suggest a rule they think is fair, and consider adding it.
Talk about it:
  • What is one rule at our house?
  • Why do we have that rule?
  • Can you think of a rule that keeps you safe?

Mastery looks like: They can name a real household rule and explain whether it is mainly about safety, fairness, or both.

Common stumbles: Seeing rules as arbitrary limits rather than protections is common at this age; connecting each rule to a real reason helps it click.
