Make a Family Flag

Design a family flag with at least one color and one symbol, and explain what each represents.

Flags use pictures and colors to stand for a group of people and what they care about. This week you will design a flag for your own family.

There is no single right way to make a family flag -- it just needs to mean something real to your family.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help your child actually draw and color a family flag this week using real paper and markers or crayons.
  • Ask "why" after each choice so the flag carries real meaning, not just random colors and shapes.
  • Resist the urge to make it perfect or symmetrical -- personal meaning matters more than neatness here.
  • Display the finished flag somewhere the family will see it.
Talk about it:
  • Why did you choose that color or symbol?
  • If you could fly your flag somewhere, where would you put it?
  • What does your flag tell people about your family?

Mastery looks like: They create a family flag with at least one color and one symbol and can explain what each represents.

Common stumbles: Copying the U.S. or California flag exactly, instead of inventing new meaning for their own family, is a common first instinct; encouraging personal choices helps it feel like their own.
