California's Bear Flag

Identify the bear flag as California's state flag and name at least one of its features.

California's state flag has a brown grizzly bear, a red stripe, and one red star. People in California made this flag in 1846, when they wanted California to be its own place.

A state flag is different from the country's flag. It represents just one state, not the whole nation.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Find a picture of the California flag, or your own home state's flag, and compare it side by side with the U.S. flag.
  • Point out the bear, the star, and the red stripe one at a time.
  • Talk about the difference between a symbol for a whole country and a symbol for just one state.
  • If you live in a different state, look up that state's flag together too.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think people chose a bear for California's flag?
  • What would you put on a flag for our family or our state?
  • Have you ever seen the California flag flying somewhere in real life?

Mastery looks like: They can identify the bear flag as California's state flag and name at least one of its features.

Common stumbles: Confusing the state flag with the national flag is common since both use red, white, and a star; comparing them side by side helps tell them apart.
