The Statue of Liberty

Identify the Statue of Liberty, its location, and that it stands for freedom and welcome.

The Statue of Liberty is a giant statue of a woman holding a torch. She stands on an island in New York, and for a long time she welcomed people arriving in America by boat.

France gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States as a gift. She stands for freedom and welcome.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look at a photo of the Statue of Liberty together and point out the torch and her location on the water.
  • Talk about why "welcome" and "freedom" are meaningful ideas for a country's symbol.
  • Explain simply that the statue was a gift from one country, France, to another, the United States.
  • Ask what your child notices first when looking at a picture of the statue.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think a statue of a person holding a torch was chosen to welcome people?
  • What would you want a symbol of welcome to look like?
  • Have you ever seen a picture of the Statue of Liberty before?

Mastery looks like: They can identify the Statue of Liberty, name its location, and state that it symbolizes freedom and welcome.

Common stumbles: Confusing the Statue of Liberty with another landmark, like the Golden Gate Bridge studied later, is common once several symbols pile up.
