The Bald Eagle

Identify a bald eagle by its features and state that it is the national bird of the United States.

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States. It has a white head, a brown body, and a sharp yellow beak.

The bald eagle was chosen because it is strong and lives only in North America. It is not actually bald -- its head just has white feathers that look different from its brown body.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look at real pictures of a bald eagle together and point out its white head, brown body, and yellow beak.
  • Check a coin or dollar bill for an eagle picture if you have one handy.
  • Compare it to a picture of a plain brown hawk to practice telling them apart.
  • Talk about why "bald" is a confusing word choice here, since the bird has feathers.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think the eagle was chosen instead of a different bird?
  • Have you ever seen an eagle in real life or in a picture?
  • What other animal might make a good symbol for a country, and why?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly identify a bald eagle by its features and state that it is the national bird.

Common stumbles: Thinking "bald" means the eagle has no feathers on its head at all, instead of white feathers, is a very common and understandable mix-up.
