The Flag: Stars and Stripes

State that the American flag has thirteen stripes and fifty stars and what each represents.

The flag of the United States is red, white, and blue. It has thirteen stripes for the first thirteen states and fifty stars for the fifty states we have today.

Every part of the flag stands for something real about our country.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Find a real flag, at home, at school, or in a book, and count the stripes together.
  • Count the stars together too, row by row if that is easier.
  • Talk about why thirteen stripes stayed the same even as more stars were added over time.
  • Point out flags you spot together around your town this week.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think a flag uses stars and stripes instead of words?
  • Where do you see the flag around your town?
  • What would you ask someone who designed a flag?

Mastery looks like: They can name the flag's colors and correctly state that it has thirteen stripes and fifty stars.

Common stumbles: Guessing a round number instead of the real thirteen or fifty is common at first; counting a real flag together fixes it quickly.
