Needs and Wants

Sort common items into needs and wants and explain the difference in your own words.

A need is something you must have to live and stay healthy, like food, water, and a safe home. A want is something nice to have but you could still live without it, like a toy or candy.

It is okay to want things you do not need. The trick is knowing the difference between the two.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Walk through your home together and sort a handful of real items into needs and wants.
  • Avoid making "want" feel like a bad word -- wanting things is normal, this is just about telling the two apart.
  • Talk about a recent purchase and whether it was more of a need or a want.
  • Praise clear reasoning, even if your child first calls a strong want a need.
Talk about it:
  • What is a need in our home?
  • What is a want you have that you could live without?
  • Is it okay to want things you do not need?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly sort common items into needs and wants and explain their reasoning.

Common stumbles: Calling a strongly desired want, like a favorite toy, a "need" is very common; gently distinguishing "want it a lot" from "need it to live" usually clears it up.
