Farmers and Grocers

Describe the jobs of farmers and grocers and put the farm-to-table steps in the correct order.

Farmers grow plants and raise animals for food. Grocers run the stores where we buy that food.

Food travels a real path: it starts on a farm, rides in a truck, arrives at a store, and finally reaches your kitchen.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • On your next grocery trip, talk through where a few real foods might have come from before reaching the store.
  • Point out that food does not start at the store -- it starts on a farm.
  • If possible, visit a real farm, farm stand, or farmers market this week.
  • Ask your child to name their favorite food a farmer grows.
Talk about it:
  • What is your favorite food that a farmer grows?
  • Why do farms usually need a lot of land?
  • What step in the food's journey happens right before it gets to your kitchen?

Mastery looks like: They can name the jobs of farmers and grocers and put the farm-to-table steps in the correct order.

Common stumbles: Thinking food simply starts at the store, skipping the farm step entirely, is a very common starting idea for this age.
