Near, Far, Left, and Right

Use positional words such as near, far, left, and right to describe real locations.

Words like near, far, left, and right help you tell someone exactly where something is.

Near means close by. Far means a long way off. Left and right tell which side something is on.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Play a simple direction game, like Simon Says, using near, far, left, and right this week.
  • Practice left and right hands together often; mixing them up is expected for a long time.
  • Use these words naturally through the day: "Turn left at the hallway."
  • Point out near and far objects together on a walk outside.
Talk about it:
  • What is something near you right now?
  • What is something far away that you can see?
  • Is left and right hard or easy for you?

Mastery looks like: They correctly use at least three positional words to describe real locations.

Common stumbles: Mixing up left and right is extremely common and expected at this age; it improves gradually with lots of casual practice.
