Holidays We Celebrate

Name a holiday your family celebrates, its rough time of year, and one way people celebrate it.

A holiday is a special day that many people celebrate, usually in the same month every year. New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July are all holidays.

Families celebrate holidays in their own ways. Some traditions are the same every year, and that is part of what makes them special.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look ahead on the calendar together for your family's next holiday and talk about your own traditions for it.
  • Ask your child what they remember from a past holiday celebration.
  • Name the month for two or three holidays together using a real calendar.
  • Talk about how different families might celebrate the same holiday in different ways.
Talk about it:
  • What is your favorite holiday, and why?
  • What does your family do to celebrate it?
  • What holiday are you looking forward to next?

Mastery looks like: They can name at least one holiday, its rough time of year, and one way people celebrate it.

Common stumbles: Confusing any fun day, like a trip to the park, with an actual calendar holiday is common; a holiday is a specific day many people mark every year.
