Tone and Extended Metaphor — Homework

Read "O Captain! My Captain!" (Walt Whitman) aloud, noting where the tone shifts.

  1. 1.Identify the four main parts of the extended metaphor (ship, voyage, prize, captain) and what each stands for.
  2. 2.Quote or paraphrase one detail representing the external, celebratory tone, and one representing the speaker's internal grief.
  3. 3.Explain why Whitman might keep the celebratory details even after revealing the captain is dead, instead of removing them.
  4. 4.Write one full analytical sentence connecting a specific device from this poem to a specific effect on meaning.
  5. 5.Looking back across the whole poetry unit, write four or more sentences on which device you find easiest to spot in a new poem, and which is hardest, with reasons.
