Systems in the wild

Model real situations (mixtures, rates, break-even) as systems and solve them.

Real problems hand you two facts about two unknowns โ€” that's a system wearing a story. The craft is naming variables precisely ("let a = adult tickets, c = child tickets"), then converting each sentence into an equation: a counting fact (a + c = 200) and a value fact (12a + 7c = 1900).

Break-even is the star application: two cost or income plans cross where they're equal. Below the crossing one plan wins, above it the other does. Businesses live on this exact algebra.

Teach it (10โ€“15 min):
  • Slow down the setup: variables get full sentences ("let k = number of kid tickets"). Setup IS the skill this week.
  • Sort facts into "counting equations" vs "value equations" โ€” most story systems have one of each.
  • Do a real break-even from your own life: two subscriptions, two phone plans, buy-vs-rent anything.
  • Demand a sense-check sentence at the end: does the answer survive contact with the story?
Talk about it:
  • How do you decide what the variables stand for?
  • What does the break-even point mean in plain words?
  • Which fact gave the "counting" equation, and which the "value" one?

Mastery looks like: They can take a two-fact story, produce a labeled system, solve it, and interpret the answer in a sentence.

Common stumbles: Mixing units in one equation (tickets with dollars); solving correctly but answering the wrong question ("how many ADULT tickets?").
