Eighth Grade · Writing · week 22

Drafting the Full Memoir

Draft a complete memoir in the chosen structure, incorporating a borrowed craft move, honest shaping, and a genuine reflective ending.

This week brings together the last three weeks: the chosen structure, honest shaping under the memoir contract, and at least one craft move borrowed from the mentor text. Draft the whole piece in order, following the chosen structure from start to finish.

Unlike a small-moment narrative that can simply end at the event's resolution, a memoir's ending should return, briefly, to the larger meaning -- what the writer understands now -- without over-explaining it in a heavy-handed "moral of the story" way.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Break drafting into sessions matching the structure's sections, such as opening frame, flashback, and closing frame, rather than attempting it all at once.
  • Read the ending aloud together and ask "does this feel earned, or does it feel like a stated lesson?"
  • Keep the last three weeks of notes, structure choice, shaping decisions, craft moves, visible while drafting.
  • Remind your student a first draft does not need to be polished -- getting the true shape and the honest reflection down matters most this week.
Talk about it:
  • Does your draft follow the structure you chose in week 21?
  • Where does your reflective ending appear, and does it feel earned rather than stated?
  • Which part of the draft was hardest to shape honestly?

Mastery looks like: They draft a complete memoir in the chosen structure, incorporating honest shaping and a genuine, non-heavy-handed reflective ending.

Common stumbles: Ending with a flatly stated "moral of the story" instead of a specific, earned reflective moment.
