Unit review: waves, light, and signals

Review and apply wave math, sound, light, the EM spectrum, analog/digital signals, and circuits/magnetism to mixed problems.

This unit connected mechanical waves like sound, needing a medium, with electromagnetic waves like light, needing none, plus the circuits and magnetism used to send and receive signals. Wave speed = frequency x wavelength ties the math together across every type.

As before, a strong review habit is asking what kind of wave or signal is involved, what property is being asked about, and which formula or rule applies -- turning nine weeks of topics into one connected way of thinking.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Run a "which wave and which formula" quick round using real objects (a radio, a mirror, a phone) around the house.
  • Mix problem types deliberately: a wave-math problem, then a circuits problem, then an analog/digital classification.
  • Ask them to explain one design from this unit (electromagnet or communication device) completely, in their own words.
Talk about it:
  • What is the difference between a mechanical wave like sound and an electromagnetic wave like light?
  • Which idea from this unit is most useful for a device you use every day?

Mastery looks like: They identify which wave/signal concept or formula applies to a new mixed problem and solve it accurately.

Common stumbles: Applying "needs a medium" to light instead of only to mechanical waves; mixing up frequency and wavelength when rearranging the wave speed equation.
