Unit review: energy

Review and apply kinetic and potential energy, transformations, conservation, heat transfer, and efficiency to mixed problems.

This unit followed energy through kinetic and potential forms and the transformations that connect them, always following conservation even as some energy becomes wasted heat. Heat itself moves in three specific ways, and efficiency measures how much input energy became useful output.

As before, a good review habit is to ask a consistent set of questions: what form of energy is involved, is it being transformed or measured for efficiency, and which formula fits? That turns separate weeks of formulas into one connected toolkit.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Do a "name that concept" round using real snapshots from the week (a hot mug, a bouncing ball, a light switch).
  • Mix problem types deliberately rather than reviewing one topic block at a time.
  • Ask them to explain the difference between "energy is conserved" and "energy is used efficiently" in their own words.
Talk about it:
  • How are kinetic energy, potential energy, and energy transformations all connected?
  • Why can energy always be conserved even when a machine is very inefficient?
  • Which idea from this unit explains the most things you notice in everyday life?

Mastery looks like: They correctly identify which energy concept or formula applies to a new mixed problem and solve it accurately.

Common stumbles: Mixing up potential and kinetic energy in a falling system; forgetting that wasted energy is still part of the total, not simply gone.
