Checkpoint: linear equations

Review and demonstrate mastery of multi-step equations, special cases, slope, slope-intercept form, and linear modeling from weeks 1-8.

This week is a checkpoint -- no new ideas, just making sure the toolkit from the last eight weeks is solid: solving multi-step equations, spotting no-solution and infinite-solution cases, finding slope, writing y = mx + b, graphing, and modeling real situations.

Work through the mixed set below. If any type feels shaky, that is exactly the one to circle back and re-practice using this week's parent questions.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use this week to diagnose, not just drill -- have them try each problem type once, cold, before any coaching.
  • If multi-step equations are shaky, return to week 1's "distribute or combine first" habit.
  • If special cases trip them up, return to week 3's two questions: "did x cancel? Is what is left true or false?"
  • If slope or slope-intercept form feels shaky, re-anchor with a real rate they know (allowance, speed) before returning to bare numbers.
Talk about it:
  • Which of these problem types felt the most automatic? Which needed a hint?
  • If you got a no-solution or infinite-solution problem wrong, what step did you skip?
  • Pick one skill from the last eight weeks you want more practice on this week.

Mastery looks like: They correctly solve a mixed set covering multi-step equations, special cases, slope, and slope-intercept form with minimal hints.

Common stumbles: Treating the checkpoint as brand-new material and rushing, instead of applying the specific habit each problem type calls for.
