Astronomy-scale project — Homework
Use scientific notation to answer each. Keep units, and round front numbers to one or two decimals.
- 1.A spacecraft travels at about 2 x 10^4 meters per second. About how long would it take to travel 6 x 10^8 meters? Show your division.
- 2.Multiply: (2 x 10^5) x (3 x 10^3) meters, and give the result in scientific notation.
- 3.A human hair is about 8 x 10^-5 meters wide, and a red blood cell is about 8 x 10^-6 meters wide. About how many times wider is the hair than the blood cell?
- 4.Divide: (9 x 10^7) / (3 x 10^2)
- 5.Look up or estimate one real large or small number from science (a distance, a size, a population). Write it in scientific notation and explain why that form is more useful than standard form here.
