Proportion project: recipes and maps

Apply the constant of proportionality and scale factors to scale a real recipe and a real map or floor plan.

This week is a project that pulls together everything from this unit: recipes scale by a constant multiplier (a proportional relationship), and maps or floor plans scale by a scale factor (exactly like last week).

For a recipe, find the scale factor by dividing the NEW number of servings by the ORIGINAL number of servings, then multiply every ingredient amount by that same factor. For a map or plan, use the scale exactly as you did last week.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child pick a real recipe from home and a real new number of servings -- ownership makes the math stick.
  • Have them find the scale factor FIRST, in writing, before touching any single ingredient.
  • For the map or floor-plan half, reuse last week's scale skill on a real map, a room they can measure, or a floor plan of your home.
  • Ask them to present both halves of the project out loud, explaining the scale factor each time.
Talk about it:
  • How is scaling a recipe the same idea as scaling a map?
  • What would happen to a recipe if you used the wrong scale factor?
  • Which part of this project, the recipe or the map, felt more natural to you? Why?

Mastery looks like: They correctly find a scale factor and apply it consistently across every ingredient or every measurement in a real project.

Common stumbles: Applying the scale factor to only some ingredients or measurements instead of every one; mixing up new/original when computing the scale factor.
