Seventh Grade · Math · week 36

Year-end synthesis

Synthesize and demonstrate mastery across the full year: proportional relationships, rational-number operations, expressions and equations, circles and geometry, and probability.

This final week celebrates the whole seventh-grade toolkit: testing and using proportional relationships, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing signed numbers, simplifying and solving equations and inequalities, circles and cylinders, and probability of simple and compound events.

Real problems often combine more than one of these tools at once, the same way this week's example blends circle area with probability -- noticing which tools a problem needs, and in what order, is the true test of a year of learning.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this week as a celebration of real growth -- look back at a week 1 problem together and notice how much more automatic the thinking feels now.
  • For any multi-step problem, ask "what tools does this need, and in what order?" before solving -- that planning step matters as much as the computing.
  • Let them choose which unit (proportions, signed numbers, equations, geometry, or probability) they feel proudest of this year, and why.
  • If any single tool still feels shaky, this is the week to circle back to that specific unit's checkpoint for one more round of practice.
Talk about it:
  • Which seventh-grade math tool do you feel most confident using now?
  • How did the dartboard problem combine circle area with probability?
  • What is one math idea from this year you think you will still use in eighth grade?

Mastery looks like: They correctly solve multi-step problems that combine at least two tools from across the year, with accurate, checked computation.

Common stumbles: Applying only one tool to a problem that actually needs two chained together; rushing the synthesis instead of identifying each needed step first.
