Checkpoint: expressions, equations, and inequalities

Review and demonstrate mastery of simplifying expressions, two-step equations and inequalities, word-problem translation, and angle-pair equations from weeks 19-26.

This checkpoint pulls together the whole equations-and-inequalities toolkit: distributing and combining like terms, solving two-step equations and inequalities, translating word problems, graphing solution sets, and angle-pair equations.

Work through the mixed set below at a steady pace, and notice which skill needs the most review before moving on to geometry and probability.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use this week to diagnose, not just drill -- have them try each problem type once, cold, before any coaching.
  • If distributing or combining like terms is shaky, return to week 19's "arrow to every term" habit.
  • If the inequality flip rule trips them up, re-anchor with week 22's "multiply or divide by a negative? Flip!" reminder.
  • If word-problem translation feels shaky, return to week 21's "let x = ..." sentence-first habit.
Talk about it:
  • Which of these problem types felt the most automatic? Which needed a hint?
  • What is your best strategy for remembering when to flip an inequality symbol?
  • Which skill from the last eight weeks do you want more practice on before the next unit?

Mastery looks like: They correctly solve a mixed set covering simplifying, two-step equations and inequalities, word problems, and angle pairs with minimal hints.

Common stumbles: Treating the checkpoint as brand-new material and rushing, instead of applying the specific habit each problem type calls for.
