Signed numbers in real-world contexts

Represent and solve real-world problems involving elevation, temperature, and money using signed numbers.

Plenty of real situations use negative numbers naturally: elevation below sea level, temperature below zero, or an overdrawn bank balance are all negative amounts. Rising, gaining, or depositing are positive changes; falling, losing, or withdrawing are negative changes.

The math itself is exactly the add/subtract/multiply/divide skills from the last few weeks -- the only new part is translating the story into signed numbers correctly before you compute.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Before computing anything, translate the story out loud into signed numbers: "below" and "loses" are negative, "above" and "gains" are positive.
  • Draw a vertical number line for elevation or temperature problems -- it makes the direction of each change visual.
  • Work through the changes one at a time, in order, rather than trying to combine them all at once.
  • Connect this to something they have felt directly, like a very cold morning or a roller-coaster's ups and downs.
Talk about it:
  • What real situations naturally use negative numbers?
  • How do you decide whether a change in the story is positive or negative?
  • Why does the order of the changes in a multi-step story not affect the final answer?

Mastery looks like: They correctly translate a real-world story into signed numbers and compute the final result.

Common stumbles: Mixing up which changes are positive and which are negative; losing track of a running total across multiple steps.
