Drafting Your Historical-Fiction Story

Draft a complete historical-fiction narrative that blends an invented character and plot with accurate details from a researched ancient civilization.

This week you draft the whole story: a beginning that hooks the reader, a middle where the main tension builds and reaches its slowed-down key moment, and an ending that resolves it. Your character and exact events are invented, but the world around them -- the food, the tools, the beliefs, the daily rhythms -- should stay true to the civilization you researched.

Historical fiction writers keep a rule in mind: invent freely within real boundaries. A character can be made up, but they should not use a technology or believe something that did not exist yet in that time and place.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep your child's research notes from the earlier unit open on the table as a constant reference while drafting.
  • When in doubt about accuracy, treat it as a quick research question rather than guessing.
  • Remind them this is a full draft week -- keep momentum, and save heavy polishing for the revision weeks ahead.
  • Celebrate an invented character or moment that still feels true to the real time period -- that blend is the whole skill.
Talk about it:
  • What part of your story is fully invented, and what part is historically true?
  • Did you have to check a fact to keep something historically accurate? What was it?
  • How does your story's ending resolve the tension your hook set up?

Mastery looks like: They draft a complete historical-fiction story with an invented character and plot set inside an accurately researched ancient world.

Common stumbles: Including a detail, object, or belief that did not actually exist in the chosen time and place, breaking historical accuracy.
