Delivering the Capstone Talk

Deliver the finished capstone presentation to a real audience, applying pacing, eye contact, volume, and supporting slides.

This week is the real, live delivery: the capstone talk in front of a genuine audience, family, extended family by video call, or friends, using everything rehearsed and practiced this year.

A little nervousness before presenting is completely normal, even for experienced speakers. A deep breath, a purposeful pace, and looking up at a friendly face in the audience all help.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather a genuine, warm audience for the real talk -- this is a celebration of a full year of writing growth.
  • Remind your child of one or two specific things they already do well, right before they begin, for a confidence boost.
  • Resist interrupting or correcting during the actual talk -- save any feedback for a warm conversation afterward.
  • Applaud and celebrate genuinely when the talk is finished, regardless of small stumbles along the way.
Talk about it:
  • How did it feel to deliver the real talk compared to your rehearsals?
  • What question did your audience ask, and how did you answer it?
  • What is one moment during the talk you felt proudest of?

Mastery looks like: They deliver the complete capstone talk to a real audience with controlled pace, eye contact, clear volume, and supporting slides, and respond to audience questions.

Common stumbles: Letting nervousness cause a rushed, quiet delivery despite earlier rehearsal; reading slides word for word instead of using them as support.
