Revising the Capstone

Apply a full revision pass to the capstone draft, using this year's checklists for organization, evidence and elaboration, cohesion, and, if applicable, fairness of counterargument.

This week borrows every revision tool from the whole year: check the order of sections or reasons, make sure every piece of evidence has real elaboration, check transitions and cohesion, and, for opinion pieces, check the counterargument is fair.

Revise in focused passes, one skill at a time, exactly like earlier units taught -- trying to fix everything in one single read-through misses too much.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Work through the four revision passes on separate days or sittings if focus starts to fade in one long session.
  • Reuse the actual checklists and vocabulary from earlier units, evidence and elaboration, cohesion, fair counterargument, so the connections are explicit.
  • Ask your child to explain each revision choice out loud -- explaining a fix out loud often reveals whether it truly solves the problem.
  • Keep the tone encouraging -- this is the biggest piece of writing this year, and thorough revision is a sign of real ownership, not failure.
Talk about it:
  • Which of the four revision passes made the biggest difference to your draft?
  • What is one specific change you made during this revision?
  • How does your capstone draft compare now to your very first piece this year?

Mastery looks like: They apply focused revision passes for organization, evidence and elaboration, cohesion, and, if applicable, counterargument fairness to strengthen the capstone draft.

Common stumbles: Trying to revise everything in one unfocused pass and missing real problems; skipping the counterargument fairness check on an opinion-path capstone.
