Pacing: Slow the Good Parts, Speed the Rest — Homework
Practice slowing down tense moments and speeding through connecting ones.
- 1.Stretch this fast sentence into three slower ones: "The soldier looked her way and Eliza held still."
- 2.Should the sentence "Three days passed before the letter arrived" usually be slow or fast? Why?
- 3.Write the single most tense moment of your own scene as a fast, one-sentence summary first.
- 4.Now stretch that same moment into at least four slower, detailed sentences.
- 5.Read both versions aloud. Which one makes a reader feel more nervous or excited? Why?
