CAST spiral: grade-4 science review

Review and apply key grade-4 science ideas, energy transfer, waves and information, Earth's changing surface, and structure and function in living things, in a mixed practice format.

This week's spiral review reaches back to fourth-grade science. Remember energy transfer: energy can move from one object or place to another, such as through motion, heat, light, or sound, and can be transformed from one type to another, like a moving object's energy converting to heat through friction. Remember waves: vibrations that carry energy and can carry information, like sound waves carrying your voice or light waves letting you see.

Also remember Earth's changing surface: slow processes like weathering and erosion, and fast processes like earthquakes, reshape the land over time. And remember structure and function in living things: an organism's body parts are shaped to do a specific job, like a bird's wing shaped for flight or a plant's roots shaped to absorb water.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep this session mixed across all four grade-4 topics, energy, waves, Earth's surface, structure and function, rather than blocking them separately, to mirror the real spiraled test format.
  • Use quick, everyday examples, rubbing hands, a speaker, a favorite animal's body part, to jog memory rather than abstract definitions.
  • If a topic feels genuinely forgotten, a short re-explanation is fine, but keep the pace brisk; this is review, not a new unit.
  • Connect grade-4 energy ideas back to this year's energy-flows-from-the-sun lesson, week 13, if it comes up naturally.
Talk about it:
  • Which grade-4 topic came back to you fastest? Which took more thought?
  • Can you think of your own example of a structure matching its function?
  • How is a fast Earth-surface change different from a slow one?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly answer mixed review questions spanning grade-4 energy transfer, waves, Earth's surface change, and structure and function ideas.

Common stumbles: Confusing energy transfer with energy disappearing; forgetting that Earth-surface change can be slow, erosion, as well as fast, earthquakes.
