CAST spiral: grade-3 science review

Review and apply key grade-3 science ideas, forces and motion, life cycles and traits, and weather and climate patterns, in a mixed practice format.

California's science test, the CAST, checks understanding built up over several years, not just the current one, so this week loops back to review important ideas from third-grade science. Remember forces and motion: pushes and pulls change how objects move, and patterns of motion, like a pendulum's swing, can be observed and predicted.

Also remember life cycles and inherited traits: living things grow through stages, like egg to caterpillar to butterfly, and inherit traits from their parents, though environment can also affect how an organism grows. And remember weather versus climate: weather is the day-to-day conditions in one place, while climate is the typical weather pattern over many years.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this as a friendly refresher, not new material; if a concept feels shaky, a quick explanation is fine, but do not re-teach the whole unit.
  • Mix review questions across all three grade-3 topics, forces, life cycles and traits, and weather and climate, in the same session, matching the spiral format of the real test.
  • Ask them to connect a grade-3 idea to something learned this year if a natural link appears, for example, weather ties into this year's water cycle.
  • Keep the tone light; celebrate what they remember rather than dwelling on gaps.
Talk about it:
  • Which of these three grade-3 ideas felt the most familiar? Which felt rusty?
  • Can you think of an example of climate versus weather from your own area?
  • How does a stronger push or pull change an object's motion?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly answer mixed review questions spanning grade-3 forces and motion, life cycles and traits, and weather and climate ideas.

Common stumbles: Confusing weather with climate; forgetting that environment can affect growth even when traits are inherited.
