Apply a repeatable close-reading protocol -- read for gist, read to annotate, read to question -- to a genuinely challenging passage.
This week you start a routine that continues for the rest of the year: every week, you will close-read ONE passage that is a little too hard for you -- older language, longer sentences, or unfamiliar ideas. That discomfort is the point. Growing as a reader means practicing on texts that stretch you, not just texts that are easy.
The protocol has three passes. Pass 1: read the whole thing just for the gist -- do not stop for confusing words. Pass 2: read again, slower, using your annotation marks from Week 1. Pass 3: read once more, this time hunting specifically for anything you would still ask a question about.
Mastery looks like: They complete all three passes independently and can articulate specifically what got clearer between passes.
Common stumbles: Giving up after Pass 1 because it felt confusing, instead of trusting that Pass 2 and 3 build understanding.
