Author's craft studies — Homework
Find two examples of deliberate author craft in your current book: one about sentence length and one about word choice.
- 1.Find a very short sentence or a very long sentence in your book. Copy it and explain the effect it creates.
- 2.Find one strong, specific word choice (a vivid verb or adjective). What plainer word could have been used instead, and what would be lost?
- 3.Rewrite a plain sentence of your own (e.g., "He walked to the door and opened it") using one deliberate craft choice to change its effect.
- 4.True or false: short, choppy sentences typically slow a scene down and create calm.
- 5.Why do authors vary sentence length throughout a book instead of keeping every sentence the same length?
